Priestess (Maggie Q)
Priest
[spoiler alert]
Set after a post-war apocalyptic era between humans and vampires, Priest has a cast of many warriors. Priestess, like all of the other priests, was outed by the Church after her fighting skills were needed no longer. She is ordered to bring back Priest, dead or alive, but instead joins him. Throughout the film, her faith in God is absolute and does not falter, and at points gives Priest strength with her words of encouragement. Though she is not the main focus of the film, she has a meaningful character arc that is entirely internal. It becomes obvious that she is in love with Priest, but respects his wishes and does not pursue it. She maintains her composure as a hardened soldier should, even in the face of death. She is willing to give her life if needed, but she also understands that she is a powerful force for good in the world.
I am by no means a feminist. I have noticed, however, that many women in any type of media will be written as a woman first and as a character second. Her role will mainly either be eye candy for the protagonist (and also the audience) or to be a love interest to the protagonist, however shallow or deep that love may be. I understand that some things are written expressly for or about these issues, and that is perfectly fine with me. There is a time and place for such things however, and I would prefer it not to be all the time everywhere.
I also understand that we have come an extremely long way from where we were in media on this issue fifty, twenty, or even ten years ago. It's still pretty common for this to be the case in almost every single blockbuster movie. Therefore, I appreciate when a script has characters that were made to be characters first and foremost, and the gender/race/other identities become add-ons to develop the characters. It is quite refreshing, and I end up really believing in these stories and find myself more attached to them.
I decided to form a list of women in movies, TV shows, games, whathaveyou of these women. I'm starting small and entering these women as I find them. Hopefully these characters will inspire others to give these shows a chance.

My family and I were vacationing in a quaint little village in the countryside. This village was surrounded by large rolling fields, with the blue-green grass that you can only find in the United Kingdom. We owned black horses, and rode them constantly. My father (who was someone I have never met or do not remember) would ride with me and we would take care of our horses together. The animals we raised her the light, saddle breeds. My horse was a very dark gray, almost black, and his name was Shadow. My father's horse was pure, jet black and his name was Eclipse.

I was at Gary's house, kind of down about having to go into work that evening. It was late afternoon and it started to rain. The rain kept getting heavier and heavier, and I remember feeling a kind of relief/excitement because I knew I would have to call out for work! Not that I don't like to work, but lately it'd just been really stressful and difficult. Anyway, just as I realized that I would have to call in, I saw a strange fiery tint to the rain outside. I went outside to get a better look, and realized that both water and fire were raining down from the sky. The fireballs got larger and larger until they were the size of basketballs. I dodged out of the way, in total shock, and Gary and I started trying to hurry back into the house. Other people were in their front yards like we were, some getting hit. I turned in time to see the largest thing I'd ever seen, which looked like of like a comically large volleyball, about to hit Earth. It seemed so close because of its size, but when it hit, it hit several miles away. The next part was a bit fuzzy and it is hard to recall... After an indeterminable amount of time, all of the people in front of their yards, including Gary and me, realize in a kind of collective conscience that what just landed was a spaceship and whoever was in the spaceship would want to take over our planet. Knowing this, a man was chosen (or maybe he stood up and chose himself?) and recited to us some mythology of a god who had had one of his fingers bitten off. In order to "become" this god in the eyes of the alien leader, he had someone bite off the same finger that the god had removed. At that time the alien leader, who happened to be a very beautiful-looking female, came up. Our new "god," whoever he was, pronounced himself as leader of our world. She recognized this and agreed not to take over our planet out of respect. The remainder of our lives was spent treating this man as our one and only leader, so that our world was not destroyed.
